How do I know when to backwash?
There are a couple of ways of knowing when you need to backwash your filter, the obvious one would be you will notice a decreased in pressure at your returns due to the filter being clogged up with dirt. Or you may notice your water becoming cloudy due to the water not being turned over as much as it should be. You can reassure yourself that these signs are due to the filter needing to be backwashed by having a quick look at your Psi gauge. All sand filters will have a Psi gauge which tell you the pressure per square inch, I would advice all pool owner to backwash their pool first and mark/note the psi reading down which will be your starting position in the future which is usually about 10 – 14 Psi lower if it’s a filter cartridge system.
When you first switch on your filtration system and you see signs of low suction and a high Psi reading then you know your filter needs to Backwashed. At World of Pools we recommend checking your psi reading and keeping skimmer baskets clean as often as possible to stop further problems occurring.
How do I Backwash my sand filter?
If you are using a sand/glass media filter this is simple! You turn off your pump and rotate the multiport valve around until it’s facing backwash. Turn pump back on and leave on backwash until the sight glass becomes clear, turn your pump back off rotate the multi port round to rinse and switch the pump back on for 15 – 30 seconds. You may need to repeat this procedure depending on how dirty the filter is. Once your filter is backwashed you will notice a normal psi reading and an increase in suction on the returns again.
If you have a filter cartridge system and you notice the psi reading is high you simple remove the cartridge and clean it or replace existing filter.
